Fine Lines & Wrinkles

fine lines

Lines and wrinkles are common signs of aging caused by loss of moisture in the skin, sun exposure, aging skin, environmental pollutants, and repeated facial expressions. While you can't control the aging process or your genetic predisposition, there are lifestyle choices and products available that can help reduce the appearance of premature wrinkles and achieve younger looking skin

What’s the Difference Between Fine Lines and Wrinkles?

Fine lines typically occur as a result of repetitive facial movements. Other common contributors to fine lines include sleeping on your side,  exposure to sun, smoking, loss of collagen and elastin, and genetics.

Wrinkles, on the other hand, can occur anywhere on the face or body, resulting from muscle contractions under the skin. Wrinkles are typically deeper set compared to fine lines, and can be categorized into two different types of wrinkles - dynamic and static.

There are also different types of facial lines and wrinkles  such as forehead lines, fine lines, marionette lines, and crow's feet that form around the eye area. Fine lines are among the first signs of aging and are shallow lines that appear from repetitive facial expressions such as smiling. Facial lines may turn into wrinkles, which are more deep-set and occur more frequently with age.

What You Need to Know About Important Proteins in Your Skin: Elastin and Collagen

Elastin and collagen are the primary structural proteins in the dermis, the middle layer of skin that gives your skin its strength and flexibility. Elastin allows your skin to stretch when you make facial expressions, while collagen provides structure and firmness. Elastin and Collagen are abundant in the skin at an early age, ensuring optimal renewal and regeneration. Levels of collagen and particularly elastin begin diminishing almost immediately from birth, and by middle age, elastin replenishment is minimal. As your skin ages, you may start to notice sagging skin, dry skin, and fine wrinkles. Environmental factors such as sun exposure, not incorporating a sunscreen or moisturizer into your skincare routine, and smoking can play a role in premature aging.

How Can I Reduce Lines and/or Wrinkles?

  • Drinking Water- Hydration is not only good for your health but can prevent dry skin and an uneven rough texture. Make sure to drink plenty of water throughout the day to achieve healthy skin!
  • Avoiding Sun Damage- UV rays can cause age spots, loose skin, and uneven pigmentation of your skin. Make sure to wear SPF to achieve younger-looking skin.
  • Using the Right Skincare Products- Professional skincare products can help reduce wrinkles and fine lines. ALASTIN’s patented TriHex Technology® supports the production of new, healthy elastin and collagen production. Serums such as an anti-wrinkle face serum can aid your skin in locking in much-needed moisture, which gives you glowing skin. Additionally, paying attention to the ingredients in certain skincare products can also help you with your different skin needs, especially if you have sensitive skin.

Talk to your aesthetic healthcare provider if you have concerns about lines and/or wrinkles or questions about potential cosmetic procedure options.  Possible skincare procedures include injectables, dermal fillers, laser treatments, botox, in-office procedures such as ultrasound and radiofrequency, and topical skincare.
